Muslim Women: the life and work of CHINA'S FEMALE IMAMS

Muslim women in China have traditionally pursued careers as female imams - a unique situation within the Islamic world. This means they act as spiritual guides to the women in their community and often run all-female mosques. These trained female imams are also qualified to preside over weddings and funerals, teach the Qu'ran and Arabic, guide the women in the correct way to pray, and give moral and spiritual counselling.

The photos and text contained in the book give an insight into the private lives and work of the Muslim women I met, and the life of female imams in the context of the fast-changing world of modern China.
