This Marilyn Monroe Gallery is my personal selection of photos, chosen to showcase her
unique and timeless blend of girl-next-door with sex goddess.
Marilyn Monroe was an actress whose career lasted just 15 years - she died in 1962 at the age
of 36. But Marilyn was more than just a sex symbol. She was also loved for her warmth and charisma
and won many awards for her acting.
Marilyn was a student of Lee Strasberg, the American film director, who said that out of all the actors he
had worked with, she was the one who stood out way above the rest, second only to Marlon Brando. And
in 1999 she was ranked the sixth greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute.
After her death, another great American film director John Huston said that it was a terrible pity that so much beauty has
been lost to us but I think that because we live in the age of film and photograhy we are
fortunate to be able to still share in that beauty.
The photographers queued up to capture this beauty on camera, including such famous names as Eve Arnold, Cornell
Capa, Bruce Davidson, Ben Ross, Andre de Dienes, Alfred Eisenstadt, Milton H. Green, Philippe
Halsman, Bruno Bernard (Bernard of Hollywood), Arnold Newman and Roy Schatt among others.
And it is no ordinary beauty. Lee Strasberg said of Marilyn: "Her quality when photographed is almost
of a supernatural beauty. She had a luminous quality. A combination of wistfulness, radiance, and
yearning that set her apart and made everyone wish to be part of it - to share in the childish naivete which was at once so
shy and yet so vibrant."
We are fortunate now to be able to share in that beauty and radiance as seen through the
eyes of the great photographers. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you.... the Marilyn Monroe Gallery!
