Lac de Cousseau, Lacanau Region of France

Lac de Cousseau is a beautiful lake in the midst of a nature reserve in the commune of Lacanau of around 600 hectares. It is bordered by forested coastal dunes in the west and marsh land to the east and the wonderful aspect of it is that it is only accessible by foot or bicycle (about 3 km from the parking area) - no cars allowed!.

The formation of the lake is said to be contemporary with that of other large lakes in the Landes area and followed a similar process: the formation of the coastal dune around 3000 years ago which gradually slowed the flow of ancient rivers to the ocean thus leading to the creation of lakes and marshes.

The reserve is crossed by a marked nature trail that runs past the lake, an observatory to the south and a clearing to the west. Well worth a visit!
