James Dean Photos

The James Dean photos in this gallery stand as testimony to someone who is loved and remembered today for his smoldering good looks and his outstanding acting ability in three major films: Rebel Without a Cause in 1955, in which he starred as Jim Stark, a troubled teenager; Cal Trask in East of Eden in 1955; and a farmer called Jett Rink in Giant in 1956.

The world was robbed of a major talent when he died at the age of just 24, in a tragic car accident which ironically ensured his status forever more as one of the great Hollywood legends.

Dean was awarded a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and is the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations. In 1999, Dean was ranked 18th Best Male Movie star by the American Film Institute on the 100 Stars List.

During his short career, many photographers worked with Dean, including Roy Schatt and Phil Stern.

Phil Stern (b. 1919) has won many awards for his photography and is renowned for his iconic portrait shots of famous Hollywood celebrities as well as being a war photography during World War II where he earned the nickname 'Snapdragon' when working as combat photographer for the 'Darby Rangers', a much lauded fighting unit.

After the war, he became staff photographer for Life magazine and produced photo essays on post war social rehabilitation. He also began work as a stills photographer on many film productions which led to his work photographing the stars including Marilyn Monroe and James Dean.

Stern's awards include a Lucie Award for outstanding achievement in still photograph for motion pictures in 2003; the Sony World Photography Legacy Award in 2008; and the Beverly Hills Film Festival Living Legends Award in 2008.

Roy Schatt is a contemporary of Stern's (1919-2002) and he also photographed many famous celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman and Grace Kelly as well as James Dean and many others. His style is very different from the normal 'glamorous' poses that you often find with celebrity shots, and Schatt was renowned for capturing people when they were relaxed, private moments that revealed the inner life of his subject.

Schatt was an actor as well as a photographer and perhaps it was this unique combination that allowed him to take great shots such as the James Dean photo shown above where Dean was caught in an unguarded moment. James Dean photos taken by Schatt are on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington and the Chicago Art Institute.
